Blue Ridge Humane Society strives to bridge the gap to provide access to affordable preventative healthcare for pets.

Preventative care like vaccines, flea/tick and heartworm medication is essential to your pet’s health pets and decreases the chances of expensive veterinary bills. If you are a Henderson County resident needing over-the-counter flea and tick preventative, please feel free to complete this Pet Help Request Form.

Heartworm Services for Dogs Only

We only offer heartworm testing and prevention for dogs because heartworm disease is more complex in cats.

Cats are not natural hosts for heartworms, making testing less reliable and treatment more limited. Unlike dogs, cats require multiple tests for diagnosis, and there is no FDA-approved treatment for adult heartworms, making prevention essential. Additionally, symptoms in cats can be subtle and easily mistaken for other conditions.

For these reasons, our clinic focuses on dogs, where testing and prevention are more effective. We encourage cat owners to consult their veterinarian about heartworm prevention to keep their pets safe.
