Spay, neuter program turns 2; thousands served in Henderson County

By Rebecca Walter
Times-News Staff Writer

Thousands of animals have received services and benefited from the creation of the Spay Neuter Incentive Program two years ago.

The Blue Ridge Humane Society created SNIP in collaboration with Henderson County Animal Services and with support from the city of Hendersonville.

In two years, BRHS has spayed or neutered more than 3,600 pets and administered 2,800 rabies shots to previously unvaccinated animals, BRHS said.

No matter a person’s economic status, pet owners in Henderson County can have their animal spayed or neutered for only $10.

Residents must bring with them payment for the surgery as well as one of the following documents to verify residency: N.C. driver’s license or ID card; utility bill; benefit statement from social security; military benefit statement; real estate tax statement; SSA-retirement, survivors and disability income-notice of award letter; Medicaid ID card; or a bank statement.

Surgeries can be scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, with pickup being the following day.

The humane society surveyed participants in the program, and 72% reported they would not have been able to afford the surgery without SNIP, BRHS officials said in a news release.
